Secret Ingredients

By Keely O'Brien

Secret Ingredients is a performance and visual art project that explores the complexity of human relationships through the surprising medium of cake. Residents across Metro Vancouver were invited to submit messages that they find too difficult to express directly to someone in their life, but feel ready to share. These messages were transformed into intricately decorated cakes, and delivered to the intended recipients as an edible form of communication.

The project aligns with the thematic focus on storytelling, community, movement, and histories, inviting viewers to consider the invisible emotional landscapes that surround them. Each cake is a private moment made public, hinting at a larger backstory, and connecting strangers through the humour, joy, challenge, and longing of real relationships.

The Canada Line, a space of constant motion and proximity, becomes the perfect site for this work, an environment where we brush shoulders with countless others, each carrying their own stories. Secret Ingredients offers a poetic, playful lens into the quiet emotional currents that travel alongside us every day.
